About us

The Florence University of the Arts (FUA) programs are aimed both at US undergraduates requiring academic credit, as well as an international mix of independent students who are looking for an educational study abroad programs in Italy.

FUA’s academic calendar follows a semester system of 15 weeks (Fall and Spring) as well as month-long summer sessions, and a 3-week January Intersession. FUA also offers long-term study abroad programs in the areas of applied arts, design and communication . FUA has a highly qualified and dedicated international faculty a large proportion of which is of Italian nationality.The academic program at FUA is based on the American university semester credit system.

For US/Canadian students a required minimum GPA of 2.75 , English Fluency , High School Diploma or equivalent

For International - English Language proficiency of 6.5 IELTS or 71 TOEFL IBT

Semester and Summer Internship Programs

Dear students, we would like to welcome you to participate in an internship program alongside regular Florence University of the Arts coursework in the semester, quarter and summer and earn credits. You will be placed in academic internship program at one of the Community Engagement Member Institutions ( CEMI). You will have an internship in your major or minor and you will have support by internship supervisor making sure you are received great Experiential Learning.

Semester Abroad Program

This program is aimed at students wishing to design their own curriculum or students presently enrolled in a College/ University who wish to study abroad for one semester/year/summer session and transfer their credits back to their home Institution.

Students may select a maximum of 5 classes for Fall or Spring session of which one Italian Language course is required. Not all courses are available in the Semester Abroad Program; students must make selections only from the current schedule of classes. Internship are NOT available to the Semester Abroad Program students.

Benefits for Study Abroad Students: 

  • Flexibility: Students can select to take classes in the morning or in the afternoon and studying abroad in Florence for full semester.
  • Wide Stimulating curriculum: Each session at Florence University of the Arts opens up a rich academic offering in diverse areas of study
  • Discovering Destinations: The Educational Field Trips department at Apicius offers an exciting array of trips throughout the program sessions. They are open to all enrolled students and include both Italian and European destinations such as Cinque Terre, Parma and Modena, Chianti, Munich, Sicily, Rome and the Amalfi Coast. Field Trips are optional and offered at an extra cost.
  • Getting Involved: Services and Opportunities for Students: Full access to services created for student life and development as well as extracurricular activities tailored to integrating students to Italian culture. Program participants will have the support of Apicius' Student Services department for counseling, advising, emergency issues, and all matters pertaining to student life in Florence. Furthermore, the department organizes and coordinates extracurricular activities on every night of the week such as sports nights, music activities, journalism, connecting cultures and city walks to discover artisans' laboratories and specialty products.

One Year Accessory Design and Technology

The program provides the professional training necessary for designing and creating fashion products. Throughout the program, students receive individualized attention and support from professional faculty and visiting artists. The school provides students the opportunity to develop their skills by learning from a team of highly recognized academic faculty flanked by visiting fashion designers. The end of each year will culminate with the event of a runway fashion show organized by students, faculty and professional fashion designers supported by local business.

Two Years Eco-Sustainable Design

The two year Professional Certificate Program in Eco-Sustainable Design prepares the student to enter the world of sustainable design and acquire the skills necessary to create interior architectural environments. Emphasis is placed on the development of creative skills and problem-solving strategies for designing within constructed environments with a sustainable approach. The institution encourages a philosophy of practicum-supported learning in which students integrate theory and practice in all of their studies in order to increase professional personal growth, self-confidence, interpersonal skills, an understanding of self and diversity when designing, and a heightened sense of ethical standards. Two Years Visual Communication

One Year Publishing Program

The certificate in Publishing unites the creative forces of Apicius, FUA, and 

FAST in a single program of study in the publishing field. The year long

program begins with the fundamentals and proceeds with the advanced

skills necessary to design, edit, produce, publish and market published

media. Particular focus is given to the magazine and book forms of

published media and the unique structuring of the course allows students

to partake in ongoing publishing projects of Ingorda for Florence Campus

Publishing. Students must choose one of three concentrations offered in

this certificate: publishing in the art world, gastronomy, and fashion. The

final project is a student and faculty produced book that will make its way

into mainstream and specialized markets. A semesterly lifestyle magazine

is also produced in house with the collaboration of students.
